Summary[]

The Space Marines or Adeptus Astartes are foremost amongst the defenders of humanity, the greatest of the Emperor of Mankind’s warriors. They are barely human at all, but superhuman; having been made superior in all respects to a normal man by a harsh regime of genetic modification, psycho-conditioning and rigorous training. Space Marines are untouched by plague or any natural disease and can suffer wounds that would kill a lesser being several times over, and live to fight again. Clad in ancient Power Armour and wielding the most potent weapons known to Man, the Space Marines are terrifying foes and their devotion to the Emperor and the Imperium of Man is unyielding. They are the God-Emperor’s Angels of Death, and they know no fear.

The Astartes are physically stronger, far more resilient and often mentally far removed from normal humans. In the presence of Astartes, most people feel a combination of awe and fear, and many cultures on the more primitive worlds worship them as demigods or angels of the God-Emperor. They should feel so, for many Space Marines feel little compassion to normal people, seeing the very people they were created to protect as little more than obstacles to a more efficient eradication of the Imperium’s enemies. This is an attitude sometimes taken by whole Chapters. They see normal humans as frail, weak creatures given to the follies of temptation, avarice, greed, lust and cowardice — all emotions they rarely feel, if ever. Some Astartes wouldn’t even care if people were caught in their crossfire, one Chapter, the douchebags known as the Marines Malevolent, bombed a refugee camp held hostage by Orks, a dick move. But there are many more Space Marines who would lay down their lives for mere men, the Salamanders, the Lamenters, the Space Wolves and the Blood Angels are some of those. They are the final guardians of Mankind, the saviours of last resort. They were intended not to lead humanity, but to defend it, sometimes even from itself. At the heart of that mission lies the limitless compassion the Emperor extended to every man and woman in the galaxy when he willingly chose to condemn himself to more than 10,000 years of imprisonment within a dying prison of flesh for their sake.

Potential Space Marines are usually, but not always, recruited from the worlds where a Chapter has established its Fortress-Monastery, although some Chapters are known to recruit from a collection of different worlds in an area of space that they protect or frequent. Recruiting methods vary from Chapter to Chapter. Some select their Neophytes from feral tribes roaming the surface of inhospitable worlds, while others draw upon eager volunteers who have been groomed from birth to become an Astartes. Still others watch and kidnap potential warriors, turning them into Astartes whether they will it or not. Whatever the method, all Space Marine Chapters will only accept those who successfully pass the grueling initiation trials and prove themselves worthy of becoming a Space Marine.

However a man becomes a Space Marine does not matter: once his body has been forged into that of a transhuman Astartes, he must forever stand apart from the people to whom he was once kin and who he is now sworn to protect. Once a man becomes a Space Marine, he is no longer mortal; his genetic heritage is now that of the Emperor Himself, and a spark of the same divine majesty flows in his veins.

There are approximately 1,000 Space Marine Chapters active in the Imperium of Man at any one time. A list to most of them can be found here. This number has stayed relatively constant since the Second Founding in the 31st Millennium following the Horus Heresy when the First Founding Space Marine Legions were broken up. However, this number remains far from exact and may fluctuate widely depending on the time period and the circumstances confronting the Imperium.

In-Game[]

The Imperial Guard is one of many militant arms of the Imperium of Man. Whereas the Space Marines are made up of genetically engineered super soldiers, the IG mostly consists of the average human soldier. However, what the Guard lacks in brute strength, they make up for in sheer numbers and overwhelming firepower, able to field hundreds of infantry as well as the unique ability to deep-strike super-heavy tanks onto any visible location on the battlefield. Furthermore, they boast some of the longest range artillery in the mod such as the Earth shaker platform.

The Imperial Guard boasts some of the best and varied armour in Dawn of War that allow the Imperial Guard to meet any foe with an iron fist. From the Chimera transport tanks all the way up to super heavy, multi-barrelled monsters like the Baneblade and Stormhammer. This superiority in armour should be used to your advantage as much as possible.

The primary weakness of the Imperial Guard is that of its early game capabilities. Guardsmen are particularly poor units early game and the cream of the Imperial Guard armour does not come into play until Tier 2 and 3, a weakness which leaves them vulnerable to rush tactics early on. This can be countered by building basic base defences and endeavouring to upgrade your Guardsmen as quickly as possible, both in morale and special weapons.

In short, where Space Marines are quality over quantity, Imperial Guard are quantity over quality. When massed, the IG can overwhelm an army in time. Because they are simply mere men going up against the horrors of the universe, their morale can go down quickly. Fortunately, Commissars are here to keep morale up by executing a guardsman to make the troops fight harder. Imperial Guard also have the advantage of powerful tanks. The Leman Russ tanks can make mincemeat out of enemies while the Basilisks can pound the enemy from afar. And of course, let’s not forget the Deathstrike…

The Imperial Guard, also known as the Astra Militarum, is the primary fighting force of the Imperium, so numerous in size that even the Departmento Munitorum cannot place a figure on the number of Guardsmen under arms at any one time; the lists of new recruits and toll of casualties can run into the millions in a single day. It would be unfeasible trying to put any exact number on the strength of the Guard; however, it is believed that there must be many billions of Imperial Guardsmen, divided into millions of regiments. This absolute numeracy provides the Guard with its main power; their ability to deploy in numbers that, eventually, results in victory. Attacking in seemingly endless influxes across battle zones, charging forth under the cover of massive barrages and delivering massed lasgun volleys, in the Guard the individual Human soldier may appear a lost thing, almost forgotten. Yet the actions of these anonymous soldiers daily decide the fate of worlds.

The Guard forms the very backbone of the Imperium for without them, Mankind would surely perish. Whilst Guardsmen are hardly the equals of Space Marines, fighting neither with the advantages of genetic enhancement or the most powerful personal weaponry, the Guard possesses the courage and the manpower to face and annihilate the enemies of the Emperor across the galaxy.

В декабре 1857 года в нынешнем селе Терехово под Бердичевом Житомирской области рождается замечательный поляк Józef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski, который в будущем, после долгих странствий из Бердичева в Чернигов, оттуда во Львов и Краков, а оттуда через Одессу и Марсель в Лондон, станет не менее замечательным британцем, писателем, известным миру как Джозеф Конрад, автор «Сердца тьмы». В «Сердце тьмы» один из главных персонажей – агент неназванной Компании по фамилии Курц (Kurtz), первобытно жестокий человек, заслуживший репутацию полубога у одного из племён Африки.

Курца, Конрада и Бердичев запоминаем, идём дальше. 

Спустя более чем столетие, в 1979 году, Фрэнсис Форд Коппола снимает «Апокалипсис сегодня» – великий фильм про Вьетнамскую войну. Снимает он его не просто так, а по мотивам повести «Сердце тьмы» Джозефа Конрада, только переносит действие из Африки в Азию, в более понятное ему время и обстоятельства. Торговец Курц становится в фильме полковником Курцем, играет его богоподобный Марлон Брандо. Убивает полковника Курца персонаж актёра Мартина Шина (это тоже надо запомнить). 

Сам персонаж Курца по пути из Бердичева во Камбоджу… тьфу, из книги в фильм претерпевает на удивление мало изменений: он всё так же первобытно, дикарски жесток и вызывает такую же боязнь и поклонение у племени, в котором живёт и которым повелевает. 

Мартина Шина запомнили, едем дальше. 

В 1987 году в продаже появляется настольная игра Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, которая стала основателем огромной и невероятно популярной игровой вселенной Warhammer 40000 про далёкое будущее, Империю Человечества, Хаос, космический десант, космических эльфов, космических орков, и вообще много чего космического, пафосного, тёмного и жестокого. «В мрачной тьме далекого будущего есть только война». 

Одного из великих примархов (я не знаю, генералов, что ли) космодесанта в «Вархаммере» зовут Конрад Кёрз (в других переводах – Конрад Курц, Konrad Curze). Очень драматический персонаж. Ну то есть как – по меркам «Вархаммера» драматический, в других игровых вселенных вроде «Звёздных войн» персонаж, построивший крепость из человеческого мяса, смотрелся бы немного подозрительно. 

Как несложно догадаться, между примархом легиона Повелителей Ночи Конрадом Кёрзом-Курцем и полковником-торговцем Курцем из «Сердца тьмы» и фильма Копполы уйма общего. Как и полковник Курц, наш няшный примарх отличается жестокостью даже по меркам мира, в котором обитает. Он, как и в фильме, откалывается от своей армии, творя разнообразные, хм, вещи, и в итоге, как и герой Марлона Брандо, даёт себя убить присланному герою, зная, что тот пришёл за его головой. 

Чтобы у окружающих не осталось никакого сомнения, что персонаж из «Вархаммера» напрямую связан с «Сердцем тьмы» и «Апокалипсиса сегодня», ему подарили не только имя, состоящее из фамилии бердичеворождённого писателя Конрада и немного искажённой фамилии его персонажа, но и планету Нострамо, явно отсылающую к роману «Ностромо» того же писателя (и да, корабль из фильма «Чужой» отсылает к нему же). Да и отправляет на тот свет примарха в итоге убийца по имени M’Shen – прямая отсылка к Martin Sheen, Мартину Шину, актёру, чей персонаж убил полковника Курца в «Апокалипсисе». 

Вот примерно так корни знаменитых вертолётов под «Полёт валькирии», «чарли не серфят» и тонны пафоса примарха Повелителей Ночи в «Вархаммере» вырастают из-под Бердичева Житомирской области нашей родной Украины.А там даже памятника Джозефу Конраду ещё нет. Нужно этим заняться.Такая история.

tartarus and lorn v campaigns

Не стоит забывать, что помимо мультиплеерных модов, есть и проекты, посвящённые одиночным кампаниям. Автор Spienold — как раз поклонник сюжетных линий, впрочем как и GreenScorpion, известный своим «Ветеранским» проектом для Dark Crusade. Уже по одному названию мода можно понять, что автор портировал оригинальные кампании Winter Assault и Dawn of War на движок Soulstorm.

Игроков ждут уже знакомые просторы планеты Тартарус и бескрайние зимние поля Лорна V. Играть предстоит, как и раньше, за отважных героев Империума — командора Кровавых Воронов Уриэля Вентриса и бесстрашного генерала Имперской гвардии Стурна.

Глобальное расширение для оригинальной игры, сделанное опытной командой из разных стран. Мод создан в основном для любителей одиночных схваток и мультиплеера и кампанию пока не затрагивает. В игру было добавлено 7 новых рас: Тираниды, Адептас Сороритас, Стальной Легион, Чёрные Храмовники, Тёмные Ангелы, Тысяча Сыновей и Кровавые Ангелы. Все они обладают уникальными линейками войск и особыми характеристиками.

Помимо внедрённых фракций, авторы полностью переработали игровой баланс в пользу хардкора. Были также проведены усовершенствования ИИ. Старые фракции также обзавелись прекрасным новым контентом, в особенности 3D-моделями

Саламандры — один из самых безжалостных легионов Империума. Ведомые великим примархом Вулканом, эти воители уничтожили немало еретиков на своём пути. И вот теперь за них можно поиграть, скачав Salamanders mod для Soulstorm. Это дополнение подходит только для любителей мультиплеера и одиночных битв.

Особый интерес вызывают уникальная тактика ордена, баланс и геймплей. Ведь Саламандры — мастера огнемётного вооружения. Они известны тем, что сжигают своих врагов заживо прямо на поле боя. Если хотите огненного шоу на движке Dawn of War, этот мод точно для вас!

In-Game[]

The Necrons have a different play style to most factions. Their builder unit, the builder scarab, is the only unit that can capture strategic points. Necrons also do not use requisition, they rely only on power which means their resource upgrades are solely for power. Necrons also have a gameplay mechanic where they can build units and research upgrades quicker for each obelisk they have. Necrons need to capture strategic points to build obelisks on them. This time bonus goes up to 100% which means that once you build enough obelisks, you can build units in no time.

While Necron infantry is slow at best, they are very strong, durable, are quite numerous and can teleport to friendly structures (or deep-strike from the Monolith in some cases). They also have very rapid regeneration: expect them to be at full health if they weren’t finished off. They also do not have morale.

Their commanders are also some of the strongest in the game: Necron Lord is near-impossible to kill while being able to kill almost anything (and having multiple powerful abilities), Overseer/Cryptek is probably the best scout in the game and is mostly superior to other support commanders, Destroyer Lord can ruin an otherwise lethal attack by hijacking or disabling a vehicle (while, again, having several other abilities) and Death Lord can become as large as a Imperial Conscript squad while having health of a titan, damage output of a commander and an ability to place a disruptive obelisk that can produce both himself and Pariahs as well as allow friendly infantry to teleport right into the battle.

The nail in the coffin, however, is the Doomsday Monolith: it is much more powerful than the Restored Monolith, can teleport and deepstrike, can instantly spawn Siege Monoliths for free, which, in turn, can spawn necron warriors for free, fly and teleport.

Despite this, Necrons DO have weaknesses: they are slow, both in movement in progression, so never take pressure of them and try to strike from afar or using fast units to harm their economy. Especially focus Obelisks to slow them down even further. They also have no attachable/addable commanders or grenades for their units and very few special weapon upgrades, making their units and army composition more predictable.

In-game[]

There are many Chapters of Space Marines across the Imperium, and they are arguably the greatest military force mankind has to offer, being genetically engineered super-soldiers modelled after the Primarchs. Space Marine infantry is a force to be reckoned with, mainly because of their great flexibility, allowing them to fight a myriad foes with a tactical response to each enemy.

Game wise, Space Marines have an answer to each threat with squads having a variety of weapons to choose from, heavy bolters, flamers, plasma guns for cutting down infantry or missile launchers, grav guns and melta guns to destroy structures or vehicles. While Space Marines can dish out lots of damage, they can also take plenty of it. Space Marines can take lots of damage before dying and have a lot of morale. There are lots of troop choices; scouts, infiltrators, tactical marines, your bread and butter unit, assault marines, close combat specialists and devastators, heavy weapons specialists.

Space Marine vehicles are just as potent, being heavily armoured and armed, capable of either holding lines or breaking through them. From the heavy hitting dreadnoughts to the powerful land raiders, the space marines have a vehicle for everything.

For these perks, space marines are expensive to train, equip and reinforce. Tactical Squads, for example, cost 220 requisition to train and 110 per marine to reinforce. This means your requisition and power can drain very quickly. It’s always a good idea to establish a stable economy before you begin building your force, start off small and work your way up. Make sure you can keep your units alive, train apothecaries to squads to provide healing bonuses. Space Marine squads are also quite small in number, the maximum squad size of a tactical squad, without upgrades or leader units, is 4. This means that your army will be outnumbered but this isn’t bad, Space Marines are quality over quantity.

The Hunt Begins Has Officially Released

The long awaited huge update for the Ultimate Apocalypse mod has landed! In accordance, people now have full permission from the team to start updating the Daemons and Inquisition factions. Also, the old factions will now need updating for the changes made to them in THB.
