Description
The Amalgam is the ultimate «evolution» of Ruvik’s mental existence, comprising of a massive main body from which multiple limbs and tentacles project. The beast’s head is equally-malformed, bearing uncanny resemblance to that of a Shigyo, and sporting a giant glass dome through which its brains could be seen, and is where Ruvik «sits» to pilot the creature.
Based on its name and the Model Viewer description, the Amalgam could very well be the result of Ruvik assimilating every last creature under his command in an attempt to destroy Sebastian Castellanos. As such, it is incredibly massive in size, towering over much of the surrounding skyscrapers and is nigh-indestructible, capable of taking successive Rocket Launcher hits to the body without flinching, and concentrated high-caliber machinegun fire could do little than momentarily inconveniencing it, though the transparent brain case is vulnerable to explosives.
Harbinger []
Предвестники — враги, встречающиеся в The Evil Within 2 .
Personality
The Administrator values loyalty to himself and Mobius, and is willing to coerce that loyalty out of others with intimidation, manipulation, and even brainwashing. He is powerful in connections and influence, but holds very little physical power outside of STEM and relies heavily on others to do the dirty work for him. He is cold, unsympathetic, and power-hungry, as well as slightly delusional about the moral rectitude of Mobius’s goals.
Inside the STEM, he preys heavily on Kidman’s fears and vulnerabilities. He reveals himself to be a cruel and manipulative individual, harassing Kidman to complete her mission of acquiring Leslie, otherwise threatening she would die. The Administrator claimed he had plans to use the fear of STEM to advance Mobius’ control over the world in order to bring «peace» and «happiness».
In the real world, as seen in The Evil Within 2, he is underhanded and callous to the suffering of others, particularly Sebastian’s. He holds no remorse for abducting Sebastian’s daughter Lily or putting him in danger inside STEM. In fact, any person who is not directly serving a purpose to Mobius is in the way and must therefore be terminated.
During his appearances in the first game (DLCs), the Administrator is depicted as a haunting entity that serves to stalk Kidman inside STEM and ruthlessly torment her about her ensnarement with Mobius. However, his appearance in the The Evil Within 2 has lead to theories that the Administrator that Kidman faces inside of the STEM is not the real deal, but a manifestation created by Ruvik in order to manipulate Kidman to his own agenda.
Another theory goes that the Administrator seen within STEM is actually a virus designed by Mobius to test the loyalty of its agents. In the DLCs, the fake Administrator was implanted within STEM system via Kidman’s injection compound given to her at her indoctrination. Like Ruvik, the Administrator has a level of control over reality inside STEM. Another possibility is that he is a ghost within Kidman alone, as he can only be seen by her and none of the other characters. In any case he embodies what Kidman fears Mobius truly is; a shadowy and faceless organization that treats its agents as expendable pawns to reach a wicked goal.
Trivia
- If Sebastian manages to defeat the Sentinel, he will quip «Bad dog» as he goes to retrieve Joseph’s glasses.
- Based on the Cemetery Lab Note #2, the wolf that would eventually become the Sentinel was already mutated prior to the events of the game due to the mutagens it was exposed to and the massive quantities of human flesh it consumed. It’s unclear if Sebastian and Joseph encountered it as it was, or if it was further changed by Ruvik’s influences before the boss fight. Based on the copious amounts of razor wire and metal stakes embedded in the creature’s flesh, it’s safe to assume it’s the latter case.
- The Sentinel is the only boss of The Evil Within that does not award an achievement when killed, whether directly or via some special method.
History
Detective Myra Hanson was the former partner and estranged wife of Sebastian Castellanos, her superior officer whom she met at work. Despite Myra’s stern professionalism, she and Sebastian quickly bonded and the duo worked together as an effective team. Four months into their partnership, however, Myra was shot while on duty and was pulled from field service, and another detective was assigned in her place. Sebastian recalls proposing to Myra while she was recovering to great (albeit unexpected) success.
Their relationship quickly developed into marriage—the result of which was their daughter, Lily Castellanos, who allegedly died in a tragic housefire when she was five. Myra was convinced that their daughter did not die that day, however, claiming that the fire was staged in order for an unknown party to abduct her. It did not help that Sebastian was in denial about everything, and a schism began to grow between the couple.
Myra was also investigating the disappearances surrounding Ruben Victoriano’s STEM project at the time of the tragedy, and after connecting the dots, was convinced that the two are related somehow. She went missing shortly afterwards.
Reception
The review aggregator website Metacritic gave the PC version of The Evil Within 2 a 81/100 rating, denoting «generally favorable reviews». According to aggregate scores, the Xbox One port of the game is considered to be the best, sitting at a 82/100 score, while the PlayStation 4 release is regarded as the worst (76/100) due to a multitude of bugs and less-than-optimal optimisation compared to the other versions. Regardless, The Evil Within 2 was considered a commercial success and was nominated for several 2017 Game of the Year awards.
The Evil Within 2 received a much more favorable opinion from critics than its predecessor, with praises aimed at its much more balanced ratio between gameplay and narrative. The departure from the first installment’s chapter-based storytelling was noted to have been a major improvement, and the game’s open-world design, while not received as well, was lauded for the many interesting narrative opportunities it creates.
Обскура (Obscura)
Description
Anima is a mysterious creature haunting the streets and many residents of Union. While she seems to target Sebastian Castellanos specifically, multiple logs and diary entries found throughout the town suggest that she picks her other targets randomly, following and tormenting them for some time until they finally cave in from paranoia, or until she decides to just kill them herself. Anima is only visible to her victims.
Visually, Anima resembles a disheveled woman clad in tattered robes. Her face is shrouded by her long hair and is briefly visible when attacking the player. Although she walks with a slow shuffling gait, she is capable of an alarming rush of speed when pursuing a victim.
The presence of Anima can be determined by the environment becoming colder and shrouded with fog that only vanishes once the player has escaped her proximity. A visual distortion effect can be observed when she’s within proximity of the player, which gets more garbled as she draws closer, letting them know when to stay put or find a way out. She constantly sings an eerie version of Clair de Lune which can be used to determine her distance from the player.
Anima is capable of phasing through walls and doors, as well as levitation and telekinesis, which she uses to hunt her victims. She is completely immune to damage and will instantly kill the player by draining their life force if she catches them. This presumably turns them into The Lost as well, as demonstrated when the local preacher is transformed after going through a very similar process.

Gameplay
Gameplay in The Evil Within 2 is much streamlined from the clumsy and uncomfortable mechanics of the first game. For starters, movement is greatly smoothed out, allowing Sebastian to better maneuver his surroundings either during combat or when sneaking with greater finesse. The cover mechanics from the Kidman DLCs from the first game have been implemented into this game as well, which allows Sebastian to brace against covers and even peek out at enemies and rounding corners to get away from them with ease. Gunplay is also improved as well, with a nearly tripled amount of unique firearm types compared to the first game.
Partially eschewing the linear design of the first game, The Evil Within 2 consists of several hubworlds that comprise the townscape of Union with rather great freedom, giving him much more options to go about completing his objectives while allowing for more creative opportunities with the placement of collectibles and side stories. As well as this, several side missions can be given by NPC’s which will grant the player resources and even weapons for completing them.
Green Gel returns, serving the same purpose as the first game to upgrade Sebastian’s stats such as movement speed, stamina maximum health and resistance to damage, as well as being able to grant new abilites such as slow down time while shooting, stealth attack from cover, and give him a chance to automatically dodge certain attacks. However it can no longer be used to upgrade weapons, instead, weapons parts can be collected to and spent to increase weapons’ Firepower, Rate of Fire, Capacity and Reload Speed.
The crafting of crossbow ammunition has been expanded upon from the first game, to include crafting of all ammunition types. Each type of ammo needs specific resources. Ammo can be crafted at work benches, or in the field for a higher resource cost.
First Person Mode
TEW 2 FPP
The Evil Within 2 in first-person
An additional feature of The Evil Within 2 is the ability to play the game in a complete first-person perspective. Originally added to the game engine as a one-time gimmick in Chapter 4, the mode was accessible via a console command and proved popular among players. As a result of this, Tango Gameworks have officially included the option to the game via Update 1.04, with additional tweaks to weapon animations and Stealth Kill prompts to address the noted flaws encountered prior to the patch.
First-person mode can be toggled on and off in the Options menu. Perspective change will take place midway through the first chapter, and the game will occasionally switch to third-person during scripted segments, but otherwise the first-person experience will be near-seamless.
Appearance
As depicted in a flashback of Sebastian’s, Myra has pale white skin, light blue eyes and peach lips, with her blonde hair tied up into a neat bun with a pearl-like hair-clip keeping it in place. On her left hand she still wears the original wedding ring that Sebastian gave her when he proposed.
Lost Form
For the majority of the game (up until the very end), Myra’s form in STEM seems to be a shell of her formal self, with psychoplasm, in the form of a gooey-like white substance, being the main element she controls. She wears no clothes and walks bare-foot save for a plain white robe which flows down to her legs. The «fabric» ends in the shapes of lumps or drips representing the white substance that covers her. It covers her upper body, including her arms and her chest, but reveals the lower half of her body. The robe also features long, thick sleeves, as well as a hood that just covers Myra’s eyes.
In terms of her physical features, Myra’s eyes have strands of the white substance covering them in a net-like conformation, which droop down past her cheeks; she still, however, keeps her original earrings. She also keeps original hair style, with the exception of some loose strands, which slightly cover her face. When Myra is enraged, the net dissipates to reveal a set of numerous glowing red eyes, similar to those of the Watcher. Her body is significantly paler, with the white substance creating a vein-like pattern from her lower torso all the way down to her legs, mimicking pants.
When hostile, Myra can harden the white substance into solid constructs akin to plaster. She can use this ability to transform her arm into a sharp, blade-like appendage.
Personality
Ruben Victoriano was a child prodigy but also mentally disturbed. Despite his young age, he made strong advancements in the fields of psychotherapy though his methods, as Jimenez states were inhumane in doing so. Regardless of his severely strained relationship with his father and anti-social, often twisted behavior, Ruvik loved his sister dearly. The fire that killed her and horrendously scarred him caused his psyche to completely warp. After the accident he was locked away from society by his father and plagued by schizophrenic hallucinations of Laura. His hatred and madness eventually consumed him until he murdered his parents to claim their fortune and further boost his research.
Due to being cut off from society, Ruvik, whilst retaining his original brilliance also lost all humanity and became a complete sadist. The Administrator even describes him as “a serial killer masquerading as a scientist“ on account of his love for torture, traps and assuring that his victims were fully aware of the horrible experiments he committed on them. Nevertheless, Ruvik still has the same love for his sister and his reasoning for creating the STEM system was so he could live out his days with Laura with his own skin. However, Jimenez implies that Ruvik’s love for her was “incestuous“ or at least bordered on that.
Somewhat understandably, Ruvik developed a strong hatred of MOBIUS due to using his machine, betraying him and also stripping away his flesh leaving him as a brain. Even The Administrator showed a fear if Ruvik was ever able to escape due to the vengeance he would reap on the organisation because of his lack of morality and restraints. Whilst trapped within STEM even though Ruvik hated his imprisonment he also enjoyed his conscious influence over reality and lack of restraints which caused him to become more smug and confident as he believed that people within his own mind were nothing but his own playthings to toy with, Sebastian, Joseph, and Kidman in particular because of their vain attempts to stop him.
Ruvik‘s incredible psychological genius gives him great introspection into his victims desires and how he can manipulate this inside of them for his own amusement to see them suffer further. He claimed to Sebastian that he knew what he “craved“ and “feared” and Ivan Diaz claims that Ruvik knew he had to know the truth about STEM and this is what led to his death by the latter. Despite his sharp memory of his previous life, Ruvik’s memories are greatly distorted by his hatred, sadism and madness. He regards the area they did experiments on him as a gruesome torture chamber, the STEM system as his own brain and the Victoriano mansion is explicitly with the areas he performed his experiment.
Trivia
- Ruvik is voiced by Jackie Earle Haley, best known for his roles as Rorschach in the movie Watchmen and Freddy Krueger in the 2010 reboot of Nightmare On Elm Street. The child version of Ruvik is voiced by Aidan Potter.
- If one listens closely amid garbled obscenities, during Chapter 9 in the burning barn, young Ruvik can be heard screaming various accusations at Sebastian, seemingly blaming him for the fire, the death of Laura, and Ruvik’s own subsequent anguish.
- The monsters’ general weakness to flame is a result of Ruvik’s own traumatic experience with fire.
- According to The Art of The Evil Within, the name Ruvik was a reference to the Rubik’s Cube
Ruvik’s original design was conceived about a year and a half into the game’s concept phase, much later than that of most enemy types. It also differed much from his final appearance. Originally, Shinji Mikami and Ikumi Nakamura intended for him to be a suave, sophisticated psychopath and hence wore dapper outfits, with the only unnatural part of his garb being the bandage that covered much of his head save for his left eye. Eventually, Mikami settled on the hospital-themed design that made it into the final release.
, which was then expanded into «Ruben Victoriano».
- One of the flashbacks shows that he can play the piano.
The Evil Within 2
Yukiko Hoffman was part of Team Alpha tasked with entering the STEM in order to locate it’s missing core, Lily Castellanos. She became separated from her team and was trapped there when Union began to collapse.
Sebastian Castellanos meets Hoffman while searching for Exit D5 through the Marrow, at the business end of a pistol. At first, she did not believe he was really the Sebastian Castellanos, believing him to be dead, but Sebastian convinced her he was alive. Using her skills as a psychologist, Hoffman was quickly able to determine that Sebastian is not a threat and lowers her weapon, and subsequently offers him shelter in her Safe House.
Some time after Sebastian leaves for Union’s business district, Hoffman is contacted by fellow Alpha Team member Liam O’Neal, who tells her to meet up with him in a restricted area of the Marrow where Mobius scientists have been studying and conducting tests on the Lost. Though she manages to meet up with O’Neal, she is horrified to discover that he has been transformed into a Harbinger. Sebastian catches up with them shortly thereafter, and finds Hoffman trying to talk some sense into O’Neal but to no avail. While she initially attempts to stop Sebastian from shooting as O’Neal, the latter traps her in the next room and reveals his identity to Sebastian, who is eventually able to defeat him.
In order to make up for her mistakes, she insists on accompanying Sebastian to Theodore Wallace’s stronghold, by keeping an experimental portable Stable Field Emitter functioning to protect him from the flames surrounding the compound.
She is killed at the entrance to Theodore’s stronghold when one of his Disciples tackled her, causing her to drop the stabilizer which breaks on impact, though Sebastian manages to make it safely to the entrance before realizing what happened. He tries to save Yukiko, but the force field collapses before he could, dooming her to a fiery demise.
Her last words were pleading with Sebastian to leave her and find Lily as fast as he could so they could escape together. Believing that if Sebastian were to do so, it would help make up for what she has done to him and to other victims of MOBIUS and STEM.
Corruption
Any given individual connected into STEM space are liable to become dominated by the system’s psychological disruptions. This is a gradual process, the rate of which depends mostly on the psychological fortitude of a subject, meaning those who are weaker-willed (e.g. Joseph Oda) are more susceptible to domination than the mentally-hardened ones (e.g. Sebastian Castellanos). This resistance can also be conditioned via specialised training, which is included as part of the standard orientation procedure for MOBIUS personnel. Regardless, there is currently no true defense against psychological erosion from STEM usage, and individuals connected to it will eventually turn at some point, some earlier than others.
As they become more and more subsumed by the domination effects, a subject becomes more and more unstable, the earliest symptoms of which being memory losses or headaches. Their mentality then degrades exponentially over time, which the subject may or may not be aware of. At later stages, an individual may exhibit and repeat unusual behavior (e.g. Valerio Jimenez).
At the height of their domination, the subject either becomes a Haunted or a Lost, depending on the specific STEM space they are connected to, and a fully-dominated subject is irreversibly lost. Certain subjects with special psychological makeup can instead be transfigured into unique creatures like the Sadist or The Keeper, either spontaneously or at the discretion of the Core. These subjects, while not entirely feral, are ruthless, murderous and cannot be reasoned with.
Should a damaged mind be safely disconnected from STEM, the system would leave specific imprints within their psychological makeup that can cause permanent nerve scarring.

Background
The Administrator is one of the higher-ranked members of Mobius, who wields extreme power and control over his personnel, though he himself answers to an ominous council of «superiors», if Marcelo Jimenez is to be believed. Through Mobius, he would supply Jimenez with funding and materials for his experiments at Beacon Mental Hospital, and later on, involve himself with Ruvik’s research. He believes the power of STEM can change the world under the control of his shadowy organization.
Through Jimenez, the Administrator would go on to meet Ruvik and hire him to build the STEM system for Mobius, soon turning Ruvik’s brain into the system’s core when Ruvik showed signs of rebellion. At some point, the Administrator had encountered Ruvik after Jimenez had activated the STEM terminal in Beacon Mental Hospital, based on one of Ruvik’s hidden letters (most likely through eye contact); in which Ruvik left his «mark» on him similar to how he had influenced Sebastian and many other individuals that could potentially become haunted. In this regard, it is heavily implied that Kidman’s mission deployment served as a countermeasure in order for the Administrator to avoid any further direct confrontations with Ruvik by using her as an expendable pawn.
