Development

Scootaloo is based on the Generation 3 Earth pony of the same name, who has a pink and purple mane and tail (occasionally ponytails in the Core 7 serials) and a butterfly cutie mark. However, her color scheme is based on that of Sparkleworks, another Generation 3 Earth pony. Scootaloo is also Cheerilee’s younger sister in Generation 3; in Generation 4, Scootaloo and Cheerilee have no indicated familial relationship, and Cheerilee has a twin sister named .

Scootaloo’s cutie mark in and is the same as her G3/G3.5 counterpart’s, and was chosen by layout artist prior to her work on the show.

According to Lauren Faust, Scootaloo was «originally conceived as getting in a lot of schoolyard fights over being picked on for not flying.»

In a mid-May 2017 Twitter conversation, Jim Miller stated that the CMCs’ Flash rigs are the same as S1.

A Octavia Melody featuring her playing her cello was displayed at the 2013 New York Toy Fair. It was later released as part of a 3-piece set alongside Lyrica Lilac and Lyra Heartstrings, called the «Groovin’ Hooves Set».

Octavia, along with a host of other characters from the show, appears on the Comic Con 2011 promotional poster. She is wearing her collar and bow tie and holding her cello and its bow.

An Octavia Melody by Funko was released.

Depiction in the series

Season two

Peewee first appears in the season two episode Dragon Quest. Spike and a group of teenage dragons, led by Garble, go on a «dragon raid» with the intent of destroying a nest of phoenix eggs. However, they find that most of the eggs have already hatched, except for one. After the two adult phoenixes and their hatched chicks give Garble and the other teenagers the slip, Spike finds the unhatched egg.

Garble and his friends tell Spike to smash the egg, but Spike refuses and instead protects it from the other dragons. Twilight Sparkle, Rainbow Dash, and Rarity appear to defend Spike, and Twilight teleports all of them away to safety. Spike keeps the unhatched phoenix egg, and when the phoenix inside hatches, he names him Peewee—appropriating a nickname the teenage dragons gave Spike—and welcomes him to the family.

Season three

At the beginning of the season three episode Just for Sidekicks, a gallery of photos on a shelf depicts Spike looking after Peewee. One picture depicts Spike sharing some ice cream with him, and another depicts the carton ending up on Twilight’s head, covering her in ice cream. The final picture shows Spike returning Peewee to his parents.

Season eight

In Molt Down, Spike and Rarity visit the phoenix nests (Spike to see Peewee, Rarity to pick up some phoenix feathers for her latest design), where they find that Peewee has grown into a matured phoenix and moved into his own nest. Spike tries to greet Peewee with a hug, but their close contact irritates the stone scale on Spike’s cheek, causing Spike to jump away in pain.

Stygian is first alluded to in the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic Issues #51-53 story arc From the Shadows by his descendant Shadow Lock, who seeks to erase all evidence of his ancestor’s existence in order to prevent his return. Stygian is also depicted as the Pony of Shadows in Star Swirl’s journal on page 20. He also appears on the A cover of .

Stygian also appears on cover B with the Pillars of Old Equestria. In the story’s flashback, his village comes under the Dazzlings’ hypnotic control, and he leaves to gather together a group of legendary heroes strong enough to fight them. In , Stygian successfully recruits Rockhoof after helping him protect his village from ferocious lumber bears. In , they recruit Mage Meadowbrook after helping her cure rabid swamp animals. In , the group is joined by Flash Magnus and Somnambula, and in by Mistmane and Star Swirl the Bearded. In , the group defeats and banishes the Sirens, and Stygian also appears in the present day talking with Sunburst.

Stygian disguised as «the Dark Horse».

In the Legends of Magic Annual 2018 comic, Stygian and the Pillars of Equestria travel to another world to rescue Princess Celestia and Princess Luna. In this other world, they battle against an alternate Pony of Shadows, who is eventually revealed (to the reader) to be that world’s version of Stygian.

Stygian appears as a central character in the My Little Pony: Nightmare Knights series, helping a depowered Princess Luna to assemble a team of former villains. His alternate self also makes a return appearance in a nightmare, with using its form as a disguise. It is later revealed that the alternate Stygian enslaved Eris, but was later defeated by her and an alternate Daybreaker.

In , Stygian appears on page 3.

Stygian is seen at the end of , researching the temples containing the other Trees of Harmony alongside Twilight, Starlight, Sunburst and Star Swirl. On page 3 or , he and Sunburst try to find information on the Knights of Harmony with the aid of Somnambula.

Chapter books

In chapter 11 of Discord and the Ponyville Players Dramarama, Torch Song of the Pony Tones mentions the Pony of Shadows.

My Little Pony (mobile game)

Stygian, the Pony of Shadows, and The Dark Horse are characters in Gameloft’s mobile game. The Pony of Shadows is the boss of the «Shadow Play» event and a boss during the «Nightmare Night at the Museum» event, while The Dark Horse is a boss battle helper in the «Nightmare Knights» event. Stygian’s bio states, «No one expected that Stygian—the bookish young stallion who founded the Pillars of Equestria—could be a vessel for the Power of Shadows…but expectations are often misleading.» The Pony of Shadows’ bio states, «Once believed to be merely a story to frighten young foals, the Pony of Shadows is all too real…and a major threat to Equestria.» The Dark Horse’s bio states, «He is the hoofbeat from under the floorboards! He is the shadow in the empty stable! He is…DEFINITELY not just Stygian in disguise!»

Nomenclature

The term «My Little Pony» – and more often «My Little Ponies» – is used a few times in the show, such as by Twilight Sparkle in The Show Stoppers, Princess Celestia, Cheerilee, and Discord in The Return of Harmony Part 1, and Pinkie Pie in Fall Weather Friends, always in conversations concerning at least one pony. «Foals» is used in a few different contexts in the show, and «colt» and «filly» are used to refer to young ponies too, while «baby ponies» is used to refer to the youngest ponies. Apart from the above terms, others are sometimes employed: Trixie boasts in Boast Busters that she is destined to be «the greatest equine who has ever lived»; Sapphire Shores mentions «Clothes Horse magazine» in A Dog and Pony Show; and Braeburn refers to other ponies as «horses» in Over a Barrel. In The Super Speedy Cider Squeezy 6000, Flam states that «Any horse can make a claim and any pony can do the same.» In Flight to the Finish, Scootaloo precedes a song by saying about her and her friends «we may just be little ponies, but we have hearts as strong as horses!»

In The Return of Harmony Part 2, the book has been hollowed out in order to contain the Elements of Harmony. In Twilight’s Kingdom — Part 1, Twilight learns about Lord Tirek through the book. In My Little Pony Equestria Girls: Rainbow Rocks, Twilight and her friends learn about the through the book. In the ​​ comic The Quest for the Lost Toy!, Amethyst Maresbury has the book.

Three pony types

My Little Pony Friendship is Magic divides ponies into three main «types» in the first episode: Earth ponies, Pegasi, and unicorns. These are called the «three pony tribes» in the episode Hearth’s Warming Eve. The storybook Under The Sparkling Sea adds seaponies, and previous My Little Pony generations included flutter ponies and breezies as well as sea ponies. Most, however, are absent from the Friendship is Magic series. The division into three types led the show’s developer, Lauren Faust, to initially give them equal representation in the show’s main cast and the Cutie Mark Crusaders. The powers of the Alicorns draws equally from the three types, according to the book .

Earth ponies

Earth ponies have no wings or unicorn horn, and therefore most closely resemble real ponies. They are the kind first introduced by the My Little Pony brand. The chapter book Twilight Sparkle and the Crystal Heart Spell mentions that one special trait is «the strength of a good, true heart of an Earth Pony.» The of the show My Little Pony Friendship is Magic features two Earth ponies: Applejack and Pinkie Pie.

Pegasi

Rainbowshine, a Pegasus pony, in Sonic Rainboom.

Pegasi, or «Pegasus ponies«, are ponies with wings and flight abilities – in the fashion of the legendary Pegasus. The term «Pegasi» is used in the episodes Sonic Rainboom and The Return of Harmony Part 1, and «Pegasus ponies» is used in the episodes Look Before You Sleep and Sonic Rainboom. When referring to a single pony, «Pegasus» is almost always used, with the exception of one «Pegasus pony» in Friendship is Magic, part 1. Pegasi can usually fly and . The main cast of the show features two Pegasi: Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy.

Two Pegasus royal guard ponies pull Princess Luna’s chariot in Luna Eclipsed. The guards have tufted ears, bat-like webbed wings, non-hairy tail and crest, and wear dark purple armor. Princess Luna and the Festival of the Winter Moon identifies these Pegasi as «bat ponies». Other Pegasi with similar attributes, including Rainbow Dash, appear in an alternate timeline in The Cutie Re-Mark — Part 2.

Unicorns

Unicorns are characterized by a magical horn on their foreheads, and they usually have magical abilities. The show’s main cast initially features two unicorns: Rarity and Twilight Sparkle, but Twilight gains wings in the finale Magical Mystery Cure.

Octavia appears in the comic book series. In , Octavia and her alternate universe counterpart appear on page 11. In , Octavia appears on page 11 in the audience of Pinkie Pie’s baking show.

In , Octavia and DJ Pon-3 find the Young Six after they were transported to Cybertron, and they work together with to free themselves from being trapped under tons of Cybertronian steel.

Chapter books

Octavia is mentioned twice in Pinkie Pie and the Rockin’ Ponypalooza Party! In chapter 8, «Pinkie-less Party Planning,» Applejack says «I heard that Octavia might know the bassist from Nine Inch Tails.» In chapter 13, «Pinkie Takes Action!» Pinkie Pie mentions Octavia as being a musician.

In Princess Luna and the Festival of the Winter Moon, Apple Bloom mentions Octavia when she says that she and DJ Pon-3 loaned the Crusaders some moonglasses for the titular festival.

An image of Octavia holding her cello and its bow was added to the Hasbro website’s Card Creator game around January 25, 2012, named «MLP_CharV_WhomeverThisIs.swf.» The file was included with the same name when the game was added to the Hubworld website around February 2, 2012.

Octavia, wearing her collar and bow tie, is one of the available playable characters in Gameloft’s mobile game, and serves as a boss battle helper during the «Rarity’s Retro Revolution» event. The game’s icon of her used fanart depicting her as a filly until June 13, 2013, though her in-game character model matches her usual appearance.

Depiction in the series

Season one

Octavia Melody being bothered by Pinkie.

She plays a cello as part of a four-pony musical ensemble at the Grand Galloping Gala in the episode The Best Night Ever. She retains an apparently calm and dignified expression when in costume, except when Pinkie Pie disturbs her. At Pinkie’s request, the orchestra plays the Pony Pokey. Octavia Melody eventually falls over when Pinkie tries to make her play faster.

Season two

Octavia appears briefly in Sweet and Elite in the garden party scene, playing with a mostly different musical ensemble.

Season four

Octavia appears in Inspiration Manifestation, switched from by a cursed Rarity during a filly’s birthday party. In the episode Equestria Games, she is barely seen in the audience as Spike attempts to light the torch.

Season five

In Bloom & Gloom, in Sweetie Belle’s dream, Octavia, seated at a table with DJ Pon-3 and Rarity, watch Sweetie about to sing on stage, but Sweetie suddenly discovers a broom as a cutie mark, and her microphone is replaced with a broom. As a result, both Octavia and DJ-Pon-3 give Sweetie a score of «0», while Rarity gives her a score of «1».

Octavia has her first in-show speaking role in Slice of Life, in which she speaks with an upper-class British accent. In the episode, Octavia is revealed to be DJ Pon-3’s housemate, and the two compose an «electric cello dubstep» musical piece for Cranky Doodle Donkey and Matilda’s wedding. The credits name Octavia Melody as in (some) previous materials. She Fiddly Twang appears silhouetted playing the cello during The Magic Inside in The Mane Attraction. She and DJ Pon-3 appear during the final group shot in The Cutie Re-Mark — Part 2.

Season six

In On Your Marks, Octavia appears at the recital seated next to Lyra Heartstrings and Sweetie Drops.

In A Hearth’s Warming Tail, Octavia appears in the story within the story first as a street dweller, then as a musician at Snowdash’s party playing violin instead of cello alongside gramophone spinner DJ Pon-3. She also appears conducting a small choir during Hearth’s Warming Eve Is Here Once Again and as a guest during the Hearth’s Warming celebration at the Castle of Friendship during the reprise.

In 28 Pranks Later, Octavia takes part in a city-wide zombie-themed prank on Rainbow Dash. In The Fault in Our Cutie Marks, Octavia appears receiving help from Gabby during Find the Purpose in Your Life and later at Gabby’s cute-ceañera.

Season seven

In A Flurry of Emotions, Octavia appears at Spearhead’s art exhibit. In Parental Glideance, she appears in the crowd at the Wonderbolts showcase.

In The Perfect Pear, Octavia appears in the very beginning talking to Chelsea Porcelain. In It Isn’t the Mane Thing About You, she appears next to DJ Pon-3 at the Ponyville marketplace.

Season eight

Octavia appears at Maud Pie’s party in The Maud Couple, and she appears in Yakity-Sax walking through Ponyville and watching the Wonderbolts show.

Best Gift Ever

In My Little Pony Best Gift Ever, Octavia makes a cameo appearance playing her cello beside DJ Pon-3 in Ponyville Square during One More Day.

Season nine

In The Beginning of the End — Part 2, Octavia appears brainwashed by King Sombra and part of his raid of Canterlot Castle. In She’s All Yak, she appears in the reused image of The Cutie Re-Mark — Part 2 during Fit Right In.

In A Horse Shoe-In, Octavia applies for the position of vice headmare at the School of Friendship. She passes each stage of Starlight Glimmer’s candidate-interviewing process but eventually turns the job down due to conflicts with her music schedule. In The Big Mac Question, Discord mentions that Octavia went out on a date with Bulk Biceps.

In The Last Problem, Octavia briefly appears in Rainbow Dash’s group shot during The Magic of Friendship Grows.
