Best Minecraft Enchantments

Minecraft enchantments can be useful, efficient, and just plain crazy. Here are our best Minecraft enchantments:

  • Frost Walker: maybe it’s not the most practical or necessary, but turning water to ice beneath our feet is just too cool
  • Silk Touch: when applied to a pickaxe, this enchantment is crazy good in terms of gathering resources
  • Infinite: why would you not want to fire infinite arrows? This enchantment lets you fend off entire armies of mobs if you find a good spot to fire from
  • Efficiency: let’s face it, Minecraft involves a lot of mining. Why, then, wouldn’t you want to make that process quicker?
  • Unbreaking: equipment breaking at inopportune times is a pain, so having a little bit of extra durability is always useful

That’s all the Minecraft enchantments we’ve got! If you’re looking for some other games like Minecraft, be sure to look up our best mobile RPGs list. We can also help you build your dream home with our Minecraft houses guide!

How to get better enchanting items

If you hover your mouse over the enchantments, you’ll see a suggestion of what the enchantments could include. If you’re lucky, you could get more than one. You can also make these enchantments more powerful if you set up bookcases around the enchanting table. If you put up to fifteen bookcases around the table, the enchantments created will be far more potent.

You can’t change the offered enchantments until you select one. For instance, if you enchant a book, this allows you to save those enchantments for later. Then you can combine it with an item at an anvil to enchant it. This is a great way of making sure you don’t accidentally waste some rubbish enchantments on your Diamond Sword.

Weapons[]

Sword

  • Unbreaking III
  • Mending
  • Sharpness V (for general use) or Smite V (for fighting , such as wither and wither skeleton farms) or Bane of Arthropods V (not recommended, unless for a spider farm)
  • Sweeping Edge III ‌[Java Edition only](Deals more damage to multiple mobs while standing still, useful for XP farms, though you may accidentally hit your pets if they’re too close)
  • Looting III (must-have for manual mob farms)
  • Fire Aspect II (Optional. Makes endermen a hassle to fight, since they teleport everywhere while on fire; hostile mobs that are set on fire set you on fire on melee attacks; cooks food dropped by cows, pigs, hoglins, sheep, chickens, rabbits, cod, and salmon)
  • Knockback II (Optional. Can make drowneds and skeletons a hassle to fight; useful against creepers)

Axe

  • Unbreaking III
  • Mending
  • Efficiency V
  • Sharpness V or Smite V (allows 1-hit killing of most undead mobs) or Bane of Arthropods V (allows 1-hit killing of arthropods) [note that axes are more useful for combat on Java Edition]
  • Silk Touch (useful for melons, bookshelves and beehives) or Fortune III (only slightly useful for melons)

Bow

  • Infinity or Mending
  • Power V
  • Unbreaking III
  • Flame
  • Punch II (Optional)

Infinity means without Unbreaking you need 383 less arrows. With Unbreaking I / II / III you need on average 767/1151/1535 less arrows (1536=24 stacks). Mending means your bow will never break if you continually gain enough experience, which will likely happen. If you have an enchanting setup and a lot of iron for anvils, infinity is better, unless you can obtain large quantities of arrows with ease. Another exception would be if you got a powerful bow early game, for example from fishing. Mending would be better because you won’t have a lot of iron or an enchanting table early on.

There are multiple enchantment orders with the same in . At the same total costs in levels the cost in XP can still be different. For example two steps costing 2 and 4 levels require more XP than two steps costing 3 levels each. The optimal enchantment orders is with a cost of 5 + 3 + 2 + 9 + 10 = 29 levels.

Crossbow

  • Quick Charge III
  • Multishot or Piercing IV *
  • Unbreaking III
  • Mending

Crossbows can only receive up to Quick Charge II through an enchanting table. Quick Charge III must be obtained via other means: either by combining two crossbows in an anvil, using enchanted books, or via mob drops.

You are more likely to hit another mob with Multishot or the same one when its a larger mob, but the chance that you hit something else unintentionally increases with both enchantments (a villager to make an iron golem angry or a zombified piglin or bees). Piercing allows reusing arrows which hit a mob, so it almost substitutes Infinity, and it can be useful for achieving certain advancements‌[JE only] or killing at spawners. Piercing is usually better because you use less arrows, and with multishot, you can only see where one arrow will land, not all three. Also, Piercing uses 1 durability per shot, while Multishot uses 3; more precious ammunition such as can also be retrieved after use, which is a benefit that Infinity doesn’t have.

Trident

  • Mending (must-have, as tridents can otherwise only be repaired with other tridents)
  • Unbreaking III
  • Loyalty III and Channeling or only Riptide III *
  • Impaling V (useful for fighting guardians, but not drowneds‌[JE only], or underwater combat in general‌[BE only])

Loyalty can be useful for fighting mobs in any weather conditions. Loyalty will make your trident come to you automatically, unless you throw it into the void‌[Java Edition only].

Riptide is useful for fast transportation in certain weather conditions or underwater, it can also be used as a reliable substitute of firework rockets for elytra as long as there is a water source nearby, or it is raining.

Channeling makes a lightning strike on any mobs you attack with your trident (only works under thunderstorms). This can be used to turn villagers into witches, pigs into zombified piglins, red mooshrooms into brown mooshrooms, and creepers into charged creepers. A charged creeper’s explosion will cause a nearby mob to drop its head (such as zombies, skeletons, and other creepers) so this enchantment is useful for farming mob heads. But beware of that as charged creepers’ explosions are 50% more powerful than an explosion of TNT.

Sword Enchantments

The damage done by the damaging enchantments is random, but always at least 0,5 heart.

  • Bane of Arthropods: Extra damage against spiders, cave spiders and silverfish. Can go up to a level V enchantment, each level can do up to 2 hearts of extra damage.
  • Fire aspect: Will set mobs on fire when struck. Can go up to a level II enchantment. If the mob dies from fire damage, it’ll drop cooked meat, if possible.
  • Knockback: Knocks back mobs and players. Can go up to a level II enchantment.
  • Looting: Killing a mob will give you a chance to receive extra loot. Can go up to a level III enchantment, each level can drop 1 extra piece of loot.
  • Sharpness: Does extra damage to all mobs and players. Can go up to a level V enchantment, each level can do up to 1,5 hearts of extra damage.
  • Smite: Extra damage to skeletons, zombies and zombie pigmen. Can go up to a level V enchantment, each level can do up to 2 hearts of extra damage.

FAQs on Minecraft Enchantments

Q. How many enchantments can an item have in Minecraft?

This completely depends on the item type and the type of enchantments in question. Some enchantments are incompatible with each other, such as silk touch and fortune on a pickaxe. Currently, however, all compatible enchantments can be placed on any item without any limit through the use of an anvil, provided the player has enough EXP to do so of course.

Q. What are the best enchantments for a diamond sword?

Again, this depends on what the purpose is. In general, however, the best enchantments for a sword would be sharpness V, fire aspect II, knockback II, looting III, and smite V. Most players would agree with this, however, some might have a different personal preference.

Q. How do I get better enchantments?

Better enchantments can be obtained by surrounding an enchantment table with bookshelves. The more bookshelves the enchantment table is surrounded by, the better the enchantments it will offer the player. This effect goes on until the enchantment table has a maximum of 15 books placed around it, in which maximum level enchantments will be awarded.

Q. How many bookshelves do you need for an enchantment table?

None. Bookshelves only increase the power of the enchantments the table will offer. Players can use enchantment tables perfectly fine with 0 bookshelves surrounding it, although the enchantments awarded will be weak. In order to ensure maximum level enchantments, a minimum of 15 bookshelves must surround the enchantment table.

Q. How do I use an enchantment book?

Enchantment books can be applied to an item through the usage of an anvil. Simply place the enchanted book and the item desired to be enchanted inside the anvil menu and press combine. This will cost EXP points to do and will slightly damage the anvil upon usage.

How to use a Minecraft enchanting table

Enchanting items in Minecraft comes in three main flavours, each with different rules. The main way to enchant items is to use an enchanting table, which allows you to exchange experience points and Lapis Lazuli to grant special effects to your items.

There are two other ways of enchanting items. The first of which is to combine an enchanted book with an item that has no enchantments. The other involves combining two enchanted items into one single item that has the enchantments of both.

To enchant items from scratch, you need to place Lapis Lazuli into the table and then the item you want to enchant. Once you’ve done this, you’ll be shown an enchantments list. Each has a level cost no higher than your current level and the number of Lapis Lazuli in the table. The higher your level, the better the enchantments. That said, there’s no real way to guarantee you get the enchantments you want.

How to read Minecraft enchantment language

The Minecraft enchanting table language is actually known as standard galactic language, and originated in Commander Keen. There are many, many tools available to convert the letters, but the words don’t correlate to the enchantment you get: it’s nothing but a fun easter egg. So while you can translate the enchanting language in Minecraft, it’s not helpful at all.

And there you have it, all the basics on Minecraft enchantments plus descriptions of every vanilla enchantment in the game. Some of these are especially powerful – we’re big fans of using Punch to knock mobs of ledges – so use them wisely. You can also enchant your Minecraft shield with three different Minecraft enchantments to improve your defence in battle.

The Forge

The Forge is a section in the shop that allows the players to enchant any equipment pieces using Shadow Orbs. There are three different types of Shadow orbs: Green, Red, and Purple Orbs. The green orbs are the most common ones. You get them in pretty much every round you fight. The red orbs are the second most common type of orbs. You can get them when you fight in eclipse mode. Purple Orbs are the rarest orbs. You can get them when defeating the demons or when you open the mystery box. This section becomes available in Act II, after the player beats one Tournament stage and makes an upgrade to any armor. However, there is no certainty as to which enchantment they might receive. There are a total of 25 enchantments in the game, of which 8 are simple, 9 are medium, 2 are mythical, 2 are mythical but unimplemented (Searing Luminary and Stone Fetters), one is unobtainable through The Forge but available on some special items (Critical Protection), 2 are completely unavailable to the player (Shocking Strike and Static Charge), and one appears only during certain challenges and stages (Burning).

The available enchantments can be forged from three recipes: Simple, Medium, and Mythical Recipes. After an enchantment forging is started, the player must wait a certain amount of time before the enchantment is ready. The waiting time varies depending on the complexity of the recipe, and it can be skipped using 5 gems. Only one item can be forged at a time, so the player cannot begin enchanting any items before the current forging process is completed, if any.

Whenever an item is enchanted with a Simple or Medium recipe, any previous Simple or Medium enchantments on that item irreversibly disappear and are replaced with the new enchantment.

The Forge Menu.

The message showing the required shadow orbs and forging time, appears as a confirmation before starting the forging process.

An item with enchantment. The players can tap the enchantment icon to check its description.

How To Read Minecraft Enchantment Table Language

The Standard Galactic alphabet is a substitution cipher of the Latin alphabet. Basically, each symbol in the Standard Galactic alphabet is simply a substitute for a Latin alphabet letter.

This means as long as you have a conversion chart, you can easily read the script found on the Minecraft enchantment table. Reddit user cadeflame has created this helpful chart that facilitates the translation from the Standard Galactic alphabet into the Latin alphabet.

Using this chart you can convert the words you see in-game into English and read them. However, they still might not make much sense.

This is because the words that appear on the enchantment table as ‘spells’ are actually chosen at random and are not related to the spells themselves. Three to five words are chosen randomly from a predetermined list of words and then the words are encrypted and their letters replaced by symbols from the Standard Galactic alphabet.

This is the list of the 62 words that can appear on the table:

air, animal, baguette, ball, beast, berata, bless, cold, creature, cthulhu, cube, curse, darkness, demon, destroy, dry, earth, elder, elemental, embiggen, enchant, fhtagn, fiddle, fire, free, fresh, galvanize, grow, hot, humanoid, ignite, imbue, inside, klaatu, light, limited, mental, mglwnafh, niktu, of, other, phnglui, physical, range, rlyeh, scrolls, self, shorten, shrink, snuff, sphere, spirit, stale, stretch, the, towards, twist, undead, water, wet, wgahnagl, xyzzy.

So, if you’re trying to decipher the words that appear on your enchantment table, it is going to be a combination of some of the words, not all of which are obviously English.

Enchanted Items[]

Enchanted Items are always based on a Common version of an item. They will always have the same basic properties (Footman Sword and a Rare Footman Sword both have 24 Slashing Damage, +3% Accuracy, +2% Block Chance, etc.) and the Enchanted Item will have additional bonuses. The amount of bonus properties depends on the Item Rarity: Uncommon has one, Rare has two and Cursed has two + one bonus based on the Curse type.

These item types can have Enchanted versions:

  • Weapons (except Ammo and Quivers)
  • Armor (except Backpack)
  • Jewelry

How to Enter the Command

1. Open the Chat Window

The easiest way to run a command in Minecraft is within the chat window. The game control to open the chat window depends on the version of Minecraft:

  • For Java Edition (PC/Mac), press the T key to open the chat window.
  • For Pocket Edition (PE), tap on the chat button at the top of the screen.
  • For Xbox One, press the D-Pad (right) on the controller.
  • For PS4, press the D-Pad (right) on the controller.
  • For Nintendo Switch, press the right arrow button on the controller.
  • For Windows 10 Edition, press the T key to open the chat window.
  • For Education Edition, press the T key to open the chat window.

2. Type the Command

First, it’s important to note that when you use the /enchant command you can enchant the item that a player is holding. This is the item that is currently selected in the hot bar for that player.

In this example, we are going to enchant the item that the player called DigMinecraft is holding with Knockback II:

/enchant DigMinecraft knockback 2

Type the command in the chat window. As you are typing, you will see the command appear in the lower left corner of the game window. Press the Enter key to run the command.

This /enchant command uses a Name value of knockback and a Level value of 2.

Once the cheat has been entered, the item that is selected in DigMinecraft’s hot bar will glow purple because it has been enchanted.

You will see the message «Enchanting succeeded» appear in the lower left corner of the game window.

You have now enchanted the diamond sword held by DigMinecraft with Knockback II.

See a list of all Minecraft Enchantments.

Congratulations, you have learned how to use the /enchant command in Minecraft.

Enchanting Table

How to build a Minecraft Enchanting Table?

An enchanting table can be assembled very easily. All that is required is 4 obsidian, two diamonds and one book. The image below shows the exact recipe.

How do I use an Enchantment Table?

To use the enchantment table, simply craft it following the guide shown above then place the block down on the ground. The enchantment menu can be accessed via interacting with the enchantment table block. Steps to understand how this enchantment menu functions can be found in the above section.

Minecraft Enchantment Table Language

An interesting and somewhat useless lore fact in Minecraft is that the enchantment texts in the enchantment menu are actually real words ciphered in a language called “standard galactic language”. The words are randomized and mean nothing related to the actual enchantment, but an interesting and humorous fact nonetheless. Below is an image detailing the translation of the language.

How to enchant items in Minecraft

Once you have crafted yourself an Enchantment Table and placed it in a suitable location, you’ll be able to enchant your items. The Enchantment Table works in a similar way to the regular crafting table but you’ll need one additional resource in order to start enchanting – Lapis Lazuli. This is usually found in deeper caverns and mines and only requires a stone pickaxe to harvest. You should look out for the telltale dark blue colouring that gives it away.

Once you have the item you want to enchant and the Lapis Lazuli placed in the Enchantment Table, you’ll have three enchantment options to choose from. The enchantments listed are entirely random and once an item has been enchanted, you won’t be able to change it so choose carefully. Alternatively, you can enchant a book which can be saved and applied to an item later.

The Enchantment Table will only let you apply one enchant to an item. If you want to apply multiple enchantments, you’ll need to either use an enchanted book or combine two enchanted items using an Anvil.
