Behavior of Minecraft Foxes

Foxes have a relatively greater speed while moving, allowing them to flee from players and wolves. Sweet berry bushes prove to be ineffective on them since no damage is inflicted or speed reduced.

Attacking:

Foxes often prey on chickens, rabbits, cod, salmon, and tropical fish relying on them to satisfy their hunger. However, foxes don’t attack wolves, even if they are being attacked by them. Foxes can also target mobs who have injured a player they trust. Foxes usually attack by running up to the target or pouncing on their prey. Once they spot their prey, they lower their head and body to make it shorter and release to leap 2-5 blocks in the air. Adopting the same stance, foxes can jump over fences and walls.

A fox that pounces into a snow layer becomes stuck, though momentarily, remains face-down, emitting particles returning to its normal shortly after. They will attempt to run toward the closest attackable mob, even if attached to a lead. A fox can also swim to attack fish in water for food.

As discussed earlier, foxes are very loyal animals that can retaliate upon an attack on a player that it trusts. It can attack most mobs; such as zombies, drowned, husks, phantoms, silverfish, endermites, spiders, cave spiders; if they attack the player. But if a polar bear or wolves attacks the player, foxes do not counter the attack but try to flee.

Sleeping and Sitting:

Foxes attempt to find a space with a skylight level of 14 or less and sleep. Since they are nocturnal, they sleep during the day. During sleep, it slowly moves its head up and down. It can sense the approach of a player or mob; consequently, waking up. Foxes do not flee if the player approaches while sneaking until the player gets on an adjacent block.

They do not sleep if they are within 12 blocks of an armor stand. If the skylight at the fox’s position becomes 15 or above, it wakes up. Trusting foxes can fall asleep even if attached to a lead. Finding a solo fox is difficult because they tend to hang around other foxes, even sleeping next to each other at times. Foxes sit down sometimes during the day, especially when they cannot find a shaded area to sleep. They usually only sit for a short period, and can even do so when attached to a lead or in a boat.

Predators:

A fox can fall prey to only two predators in Minecraft: Wild Wolves, and Polar Bears. Wild wolves can be aggressive to foxes within a range of 16 to 18 blocks. Polar bears can sneak to attack foxes in the Java edition; in the Bedrock Edition, they attack foxes within 16 blocks. Even baby polar bears, being passive towards players, also attempt to attack foxes within 16 blocks.

Villages:

Foxes will target villages specifically to steal items from villagers and feed on their chickens. Such behavior is normally exhibited by the foxes at night since they are at their peak activity.

Items:

If any item is near a fox, it will travel to the item and take it causing the item to appear in its mouth. This behavior is not limited to a specific type of item; any item that the player can obtain can be picked up by a fox. They prioritize picking up food items, though, and if they have already picked up non-food items, they replace them with food. Eventually, a fox consumes any food object that it picks up (besides cake) and any side effects from the food, such as poison or teleportation, affect the fox.

How to Enter the Command

1. Open the Chat Window

The easiest way to run a command in Minecraft is within the chat window. The game control to open the chat window depends on the version of Minecraft:

  • For Java Edition (PC/Mac), press the T key to open the chat window.
  • For Pocket Edition (PE), tap on the chat button at the top of the screen.
  • For Xbox One, press the D-Pad (right) on the controller.
  • For PS4, press the D-Pad (right) on the controller.
  • For Nintendo Switch, press the right arrow button on the controller.
  • For Windows 10 Edition, press the T key to open the chat window.
  • For Education Edition, press the T key to open the chat window.

2. Type the Command

In this example, we are going to summon a fox in Minecraft Java Edition (PC/Mac) 1.14 with the following command:

/summon fox

Type the command in the chat window. As you are typing, you will see the command appear in the lower left corner of the game window. Press the Enter key to run the command.

Once the cheat has been entered, the fox will spawn and appear in your world:

You will see the message «Summoned new Fox» appear in the lower left corner of the game window to indicate that the fox has been summoned. You may need to look behind you to see it.

Congratulations, you have summoned a fox in Minecraft.

Drops[]

Upon death, adult foxes drop 1–2‌[JE only]/1–3‌[BE only] when killed by a player or tamed wolf.

Like other baby animals, killing a baby fox yields no experience.

Foxes always drop any items they pick up and are still holding (they cannot drop food that they have eaten, for example) and drop items they spawn with naturally with a 100% chance, so:

Drop Chance
JE BE
Emerald 1%
Rabbit’s Foot 2%
Rabbit Hide 2%
Egg 3% 4%
Wheat 4%
Leather 4%
Feather 4% 3%

If a fox is killed while holding a totem of undying, then the fox consumes the totem and revives itself instead of dropping the totem.

Upon successful breeding, 1–7 are dropped.

Trivia

  • If a fox happens to be holding a totem of undying in its mouth and receives fatal damage, the totem will activate the same as if it were a player holding it. The totem will disappear, and the fox will stay alive.
  • Foxes won’t attack chickens that are invulnerable.
  • Foxes will wake up if a chicken, rabbit, or fish is nearby.
  • Like other animals that produce offspring, using a spawn egg on a fox will spawn a baby fox that is trusting to the player.
  • Foxes will deal more damage in attacks if they are holding a weapon in their mouths.
  • Foxes can eat a food item in its mouth. If they eat food with a possible side effect (An example being a Golden Apple,) they will get the side effect after eating the said food.
  • Foxes are one of the first nocturnal passive mobs in Minecraft.
  • If a fox pounces on an area that has snow after it jumps, it will get stuck on it temporarily and will dig out of the area.
  • Wolves and polar bears will attack nearby foxes. Though, foxes can usually outrun them.
  • The first texture of the fox is glitched, as it appeared as a flat box. This glitch is mentioned in a video of Magma’s, Ten Things You Probably Didn’t Know About Village & Pillage.
  • Foxes are the only mob that will not take damage from sweet berry bushes.
  • Foxes will look wall-eyed when viewed in the front, but they would look normal when viewed from their sides.
  • Foxes cannot eat cake when they are holding it.
  • You cannot spawn white foxes in their respective biomes.
  • There is a glitch in Bedrock Edition when a baby fox is holding an item, the baby fox will still have the collision box of the adult fox, thus making the object appear in the air.
  • There is a very rare occurrence when a fox is sitting and enters a portal. It will stay sitting and will never stop sitting

Background

There are 2 types of foxes in Minecraft — Red Fox and Snowy Fox. The following is a picture of what each fox looks like:

Snowy Fox
Hostility Level Passive Mob
Health Points 20 health points x 10
Where to Find In the Taiga and Snowy Taiga biomes
Weapon None
Attack Method Will never attack you
Drops 0-1 Emerald 0-1 Feather 0-1 Egg 0-1 Leather 0-1 Cooked Porkchop 0-1 Wheat 0-1 Rabbit Hide 0-1 Rabbit’s Foot
Experience Points 1-3 experience points
Special Skills A fox can be tamed and can make a great companion

Hostility Level (Passive)

A fox is a passive mob. The term mob is short for mobile and is used to refer to all living, moving creatures in the game such as chickens, creepers, and foxes. Because a fox is a passive mob, it will never attack you in the game (Creative or Survival mode).

Health Points

In Minecraft, a fox has 10 hearts for health. This gives a fox 20 health points (because 1 heart = 2 health points). To kill a fox, you need to inflict 20 points of damage to the fox.

Where to Find Foxes

In Minecraft, foxes are nocturnal animals that are more active at night. You can find the Red Fox in the Taiga biome and the Snowy Fox in the Snowy Taiga biome.

If you are having trouble finding a fox, you can summon a fox using a cheat or you can use a spawn egg.

Attack Method

You are safe to walk near a fox and it will not attack or cause you any damage. And if you attack a fox, it will just try to run away. It will not attack you back.

Drops

A fox may naturally spawn with one of the following items in its mouth — such as an emerald, feather, egg, leather, cooked porkchop, wheat, rabbit hide or rabbit’s foot.

However, a fox can also walk over and pick up any item that it sees on the ground. These items will appear in the fox’s mouth.

When you kill a fox in Minecraft, it will drop the item that it is carrying in its mouth. Make sure you pick up any dropped items before they disappear. They are useful and should be kept in your inventory to be used later.

Experience Points

As you play the game, you will gain experience. The most common way to gain experience is by killing mobs. When a mob is killed you will see tiny green and yellow balls appear and move towards you.

These orbs represent experience points. When you kill a fox, you will gain 1-3 experience points.

Special Skills

A fox is a unique mob that can be tamed which allows the fox to trust a player. The tamed fox will attack hostile mobs that harm this «trusted» player.

Snowy Fox

Behavior

During the daytime, a fox will try to find shelter to sleep (a space with a block above it). It will curl up and make snoring noises, slowly lift its head every so often while lying down. If a player who is not sneaking (or a wolf or polar bear) approaches, it will wake up and run away.

At night, foxes will wander around, eating nearby sweet berry bushes, and will run from wolves, polar bears and players if they get too close. They will sometimes head over to villages to roam around. During the night, foxes will emit a screeching noise.

Foxes will chase and attack small animals such as chickens, rabbits, baby turtles (and even fish, if they are close enough to shore). Trusting foxes will attack any mob that harms the player. Foxes may even jump over fences and other blocks to get to their prey. They can jump 2-5 blocks.

If an item is dropped near a fox, it will walk over and pick it up to hold in its mouth. However, foxes will prioritize mostly food items.

FAQs

Q. How to get a rare white fox in Minecraft?

The only difference between getting a normal fox and the snowy fox is the biome. If you manage to locate a Snowy Taiga biome near you, there are high chances of finding white foxes there. Once you find a white fox you can use the same method to breed them and get a loyal offspring that will stay by your side.

Q. What do foxes eat in Minecraft?

Foxes attack chickens, rabbits, cod, salmon, and tropical fish. A fox can eat any food item it picks up besides cake. Although its diet is quite diverse, it is normally seen feeding on sweet berries and they tend to enjoy it the most.

Q. Do tamed foxes follow you?

Unfortunately, foxes won’t be your trusty companion on an adventure like tame wolves. You’ll need a lead if you want to bring foxes anywhere with you, and since they like to sleep during the day they are best left at home.
